5 Ways to Celebrate Pharmacy Technician Day

Four smiling pharmacy technicians in navy scrubs laughing together at a pharmacy counter

Ask anyone who has worked an independent pharmacy counter who actually keeps the place running, and you'll get the same answer. It's the tech.

It's the tech who catches the insurance rejection before the patient gets to the register. The one who knows Mrs. Alvarez picks up on Thursdays and always forgets her second refill. The one on the phone with the wholesaler at 4:45, trying to get a short-dated order in before the cutoff. Most of that work is invisible. Nobody notices it until it doesn't happen.

RxPost was founded by someone who spent 20 years as a pharmacy technician, so this day means something to us. National Pharmacy Technician Day falls on the third Tuesday of October, which this year is Tuesday, October 20, 2026. It's a good excuse to say out loud what you already know: your techs are the reason your pharmacy works.

You don't need a big budget to make it count. You just need to mean it.

5 ways to celebrate your pharmacy techs

1. Close the window for a team lunch

Most pharmacies stagger breaks, so one person is always covering the counter, and the whole team almost never sits down together. This year, change that. Buy lunch for everyone, put a "Back in 30 minutes" sign on the front, and close the window for half an hour so the whole staff gets a break at the same time. Thirty minutes of eating together, with no phones and no line, is a rare thing in a pharmacy. Order from the local spot your regulars love, and you're supporting another small business while you're at it.

2. Finally fix that one annoying thing

Every pharmacy has one. The label printer that jams twice a shift. The phone system that drops calls mid-transfer. The fill station with no anti-fatigue mat, where someone stands for long hours. Your techs have mentioned it, probably more than once, and it's easy to put on the "someday" list. Ask your team what one thing makes their day harder, then actually fix it. It's often cheaper than a catered lunch, and it shows you were listening the whole time.

3. Notice who's carrying the extra load

Burnout in pharmacy rarely comes from one bad day. It builds from the extra shift someone covered, the lunch they skipped because the line wouldn't stop, the coworker's work they quietly finished on top of their own. And most of the time, nobody says anything about it. So say something. When a tech covers a shift or stays late to get the orders out, thank them by name. Leave a coffee card at their station, or bring in their favorite drink the next morning. It's a small gesture, but it tells your team the extra effort doesn't go unnoticed.

4. Point them toward what's next

Plenty of techs want to grow, whether that's certification, immunizations, compounding, or a lead role. The hard part is knowing where to start. Pharmacy associations post CE courses, webinars, and events all year, and many have spaces just for techs. In California, for example, CPhA has a Pharmacy Technician Community and a regular CE and events calendar. If your pharmacy belongs to an association, pin its upcoming events and talks in the break room or forward the newsletter to your techs. It's a small step that tells them you're thinking about their future, not just next week's schedule.

5. Brag about them where your community can see it

Your patients already love your techs. Let them say so. Put up a "Meet our techs" board by the register with a photo and one fun fact about each person. Post a shout-out on your pharmacy's Facebook or Instagram and invite patients to comment with a thank you. Public recognition lands differently than a pat on the back in the break room, and it reminds your neighborhood that real people are behind the counter.

Nominate a tech: our $700 giveaway

We're giving away $700 in gift cards to pharmacy techs who deserve to treat themselves, and we need your help finding them.

It starts behind the counter

RxPost started behind a pharmacy counter. It came from a tech who spent years calling around to nearby stores, trying to find a home for medication before it expired. That's the kind of problem techs solve every day, usually without anyone noticing.

So on October 20, notice. Close the window for lunch, fix that annoying thing, nominate your favorite tech.

And if one of the things eating up your techs' afternoons is moving short-dated or overstock inventory, we built RxPost to give them that time back. Sign up free and see what your shelf is worth to the pharmacy down the road.

Happy Pharmacy Technician Day to every tech out there. We see you.
